Reviews - Why It's Cool To Be A Choc Chick

Never has it been so easy and so inexpensive to make your own delicious chocolates!

When people ask me, 'Who made the chocolates' and I reply, 'Me!' they always look quite shocked! But it is SO easy to make your own - all you need are a few basic ingredients and five minutes of your time, a bit of creative license and then you can have chocolate coming out of your ears - if you want to!

Choc Chick have a fabulous range of three different chocolate-making packages and the one I tried and tested was the Choc Chick Starter Pack which retails at £20 (including postage and packaging.)

I have to say that being a girl (ok, a woman in her late thirties!) and a chocolate-lover PLUS also keen on products being packaged beautifully, I was not disappointed when the Choc Chick parcel arrived at my door. In the starter kit you get enough ingredients to make around 80 delicious chocolates including:

10ml Vanilla Bean Extract
100ml Agave Syrup
250g Extra Virgin Raw Cacao Butter
250g Unprocessed Raw Cacao Powder

and a useful recipe book.

But you also get a handful of lovely bags to put the chocolates in once you have made them, fancy stickers so you can put them on the bags and say 'Love From...' and everything is brought to you in a trendy brown paper bag.

This would make an excellent birthday/mother's day/best friend girlie gift - and if you want to make more chocolates you simply order one of the bigger packs - standard or super.

The only thing I would have wanted if I was a real beginner is to have a tray of moulds (heart-shaped, of course!) included in the pack so I could get going straight away. I know this may bump the price up a bit but it would save me sourcing one separately. However I have a stash to hand and also usually just use a tupperware case - I pour the chocolate in, set in the fridge then turn out onto a chopping board and then cut into chunks. MMMMMmmmmm!

Whilst I was navigating the Choc Chick site I also found to my delight that they are an ethically-run business (which I had already expected but was glad to read!)

The raw cacao powder and raw cacao butter they use in the Choc Chick Kits are grown by a fair trade, family run business in Ecuador. One of the Choc Chick crew states that, 'Their business is an integral part of the community: they look after all their workers and make a point of hiring single mothers, who find it particularly hard to find work in Ecuador. All workers are given free food which includes organic, pesticides free rice and flour.'

So not only are these ladies at Choc Chick providing us girls with the means to make our own chocolates, they are also showing the great example of how a small business can make a big difference by insisting on certain ethical standards and working with other people from different countries, giving them a chance to share their work and make a living.
